Stout Re-Signs with McCumbee McAleer Racing for 2018 Mazda MX-5 Cup Season
BROWNSBURG, IN (March 2, 2018) – Robert Stout, the 2017 Battery Tender Global MX-5 Cup Rookie-of-the-Year, has re-signed with McCumbee McAleer Racing for the upcoming 2018 MX-5 Cup series season. Stout’s No. 28 MX-5 will again feature partners Lucas Oil Products, Lucas Oil Racing TV, SC Fuels, Impact Racing and CatSpot.
Coming off a dominating 2017 season that saw Stout win the $50,000 Rookie-of-the Year award and finishing 3rd in the final driver standings, Stout returns with the singular aim of winning the 2018 Mazda MX-5 Cup Championship. Stouts long-standing relationship with his primary sponsor Lucas Oil Products continues for its 13th year in 2018. As well, Stout’s partnership with Impact Race Products will enter its 11th year this coming season. Also returning to support Stout’s efforts are SC Fuels, Mazda Motorsports and CatSpot Organic Cat Litter.
“We’re excited to be back in the Mazda MX-5 Cup series for 2018,” said Stout. “The racing last year was as tough as any I’ve seen and I’m sure this year will be no different! The gang from Mazda have created the only real path to the pinnacle of the sport with their Road to the 24 and the series itself is a wonderful group to race with. We missed the goal of winning the Championship last year by a couple of spots but there is nobody better than McCumbee McAleer Racing to chase it with and we couldn’t be happier with the opportunity to race with them again! Hopefully we can give the team back-to-back Championships!”

Stout along with the rest of the multi-car MMR team will begin the chase for the 2018 Championship this weekend March 3 and 4 with an official series test at Barber Motorsports Park – also the site for Rounds 3 & 4 in April.
The 2018 Battery Tender Global Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich Tires schedule features four INDYCAR weekends, including a return to the popular Portland International Raceway, in Portland, Oregon, for the first time since 2008. The championship season will conclude in October at the Monticello Motor Club, just 90 minutes from New York City.
Each of the six weekends features two 45-minute races for a 12-race championship. The MX-5 Cup champion earns a $200,000 Mazda Road to 24 (MRT24) Scholarship.
2017 Battery Tender Global Mazda MX-5 Cup Champion Takes Mid-Ohio Podium
MANSFIELD, OH (May 9, 2018) – 2017 Battery Tender Global Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich Tires Champion Patrick Gallagher was back in racing action this weekend, earning a second-place finish at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge.
Gallagher, who won an astounding $275,000 in Global Mazda MX-5 Cup competition in 2017, converted his Mazda support into a move up to the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge ranks in 2018.
The Ohio State alum, Gallagher returned to his home state and track for his best finish of the 2018 season in the No. 8 ModSpace Motorsports Ford Mustang GT4.
Gallagher’s former Global Mazda MX-5 Cup team co-owner Chad McCumbee co-drove with Gallagher, and started the race from pole position for the two-hour event.
The former NASCAR pilot was no slouch in the race, either, following up his run to the pole as his race pace continued to impress as he was the only GS driver to break into the 1:27.00s, posting a fast time of 1:27.908-seconds.
After turning the car over to Gallagher to take to the finish, the duo were well-placed for a podium and fought for a win. With one a single caution period it was a sprint to the checkered as Gallagher worked his No. 8 ModSpace GT4 machine through traffic.
The storybook home town run came just shy of the top step after Gallagher lost the lead as his rear tires lost grip in the waning moments of the race.
The result is the first full distance the duo have reached this season and is their first podium of the year as well as Gallagher finished 2nd in the 24-car GS Class field on the 2.238-mile circuit completing 77 laps.
“I am happy to be back to my home track to race with my friends and family able to be here,” said Gallagher. “I am bummed to not get the big trophy today for ModSpace and Mazda, but we just ran out of tire at the end and I was a sitting duck. I learned a ton though and it is cool to get our first podium. It’s frustrating to miss the win by such a small margin, it just wasn’t our day but we will just keep the momentum going onto the next race.”

Robert Stout Scores Double Podium Finishes
BROWNSBURG, IN (July 13, 2018) Robert Stout was on his game for his busiest weekend of the year June 21-23. Stout scored two podium finishes competing in three races in two separate series – the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup series from Road America, Elkhart Lake, WI and the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing series from Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO.
The reigning Mazda MX-5 Cup Rookie of the Year kicked off the weekend with a double round of Mazda MX-5 Cup series qualifying on the legendary four-mile Road America road course. Missing the mark just a bit he qualified his Lucas Oil / SC Fuels / Magic-Dry Absorbent / Impact No. 28 Mazda MX-5 prepared by McCumbee McAleer Racing 8th in the 25-car field for Round 5 of the 2018 season but stepped it up for Round 6 earning a starting spot in 4th.
The Round 5 race proved to be quite a challenge as Stout battled for 45 minutes in the lead pack of 10 only to advance one spot finishing 7th as the checkered flag flew.
“It’s just how it goes out here at Road America,” said Stout after the race. "You’re a victim of the draft in these 10-car packs and we just never had it fall our way.”
Stout had a much better opportunity to podium for Round 6 given he was starting on the outside of row 2, but at the drop of the green flag the inside row sailed right by pushing him back into 8th at the end of lap one – a huge hole to dig out of. With 40 minutes to work he started picking his way to the front and with 10 minutes to go had made his way back up to 2nd behind teammate Joey Bickers in the No. 34 McCumbee MacAleer Racing machine. The MMR tandem didn’t stay there long though as the pack drafted by just one lap later. Stout fell back to 4th in a four-car breakaway and was ready to battle for the front, but a yellow flag came out with just five minutes to go grouping the 25-car pack back together, setting the stage for a final lap fight!
The restart saw the green and white flags fly simultaneously and the battle was on. Stout was able to get around Bickers in the hard-braking zone of turn 5 and hung on to finish 3rd for his 2nd podium of the season!
“These races are so much fun,” said Stout after the race. “There are at least 10 to 12 guys out here that can win at any time and there is never a break in these huge packs of 10 bump drafting for 45 minutes. There were 305 passes made in 40 minutes out here in this 25-car field, that is just mind boggling!”
Leaving Road America, Stout was just eight points out of 2nd place in the Mazda MX-5 Cup Driver’s Championship. Stout then climbed into the truck and headed 10 hours south to beautiful Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO to compete in the Off Road series in the Production 1000 UTV class.
It would be doubly difficult for the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing series rookie at Wheatland as the series had already been racing there for two days and Stout would have to play catch-up. The KSR team acquired Brandon Arthur to fill in for Stout for Round 4 while he competed at Road America. Arthur got off to a great start as he qualified the No. 915 Magic-Dry Absorbent / Yawpower / SC Fuels / Impact / Cover Craft Yamaha up front earning the KSR team their first pole in the series!
Arthur and series champion Brock Heger battled back and forth for the lead in the first few laps of Round 4. While Arthur was leading Heger he clipped the inside berm and rolled the car over on its lid. While the track safety crew were able to roll the car back over for Arthur to continue the damage to the front end was severe. The run for the win was over and the day ended with a 12th place finish.
“Things didn’t end well but that’s just how it goes sometimes,” said Stout. “But Brandon was a huge help to the team. He knows these cars well and has won in them. He was a wealth of information when I arrived and seeing him in the car gave me the confidence needed to get after it very quickly."
With Stout back behind the wheel for Round 5 at the challenging 1.2-mile course, the series allowed two hardship laps to ensure repairs to the damaged front-end were good. Stout made one lap at 70% then attacked with full confidence clearing the huge 200-foot table top on lap 2.
“Ha ha … my plan was to just shake it down for both laps but the first lap was really good and the car felt great so I went for it on the second lap. I’m not gonna lie, that table top in the back puckered me up for sure, it is huge!” said Stout. “I watched Brandon on the provided by LucasOilRacing.TV live stream and knew the car flew perfect thanks to our Yawpower Suspension, so I just had to get over my fear and pin it, BOOM!”
Next up was qualifying but racing in the Midwest always has its challenges and Mother Nature decided to play a roll. Light rain began to fall just before the class headed out for the quick five-lap session creating a slick muddy challenge. Stout was able to record an early lap that had him in the top 5 but the course quickly dried up and the Hoosier tires were coming to life as Stout was learning the track. On his final qualifying lap he put one together and jumped up to 2nd just 8-tenths off the pole held by the reigning champ Brock Heger in the No. 921 machine.
“I broke my ear buds on the way out, so I had no communication with the team and had no idea where I was in the field and then almost smoked the wall on lap two in the mud. It was so slick but my last lap did feel good, so I was hoping to at least be in the top 6 for the inversion (Series mandated qualifying process). I was pretty surprised when they said I was 2nd and then Brock pulled the two-pill for the inversion putting us on the pole so it all worked out perfectly!”
Mother nature then unloaded her furry with a torrential downpour turning the course into a muddy swamp forcing a delay. Stout’s goal once the race got underway was to stay out front and keep the face mask clean but it wasn’t going to be that easy.
Stout led the field to the green flag but at the hit of the throttle blasted into some thick heavy mud allowing Heger to grab the hole shot into turn one as the entire field dealt with the extremely slippery track. Stout slotted into second but a hard charging Keith Brooks in the No. 942 machine got by on lap 2 and by the midway point of the shortened race Stout was back to 4th as Ronnie Anderson in the No. 952 machine was also able to get by.
During the series’ mandatory caution Stout radioed in that the face mask was fogging up and he had used all of his tear-offs. In short, he just couldn’t see where he was going. With a chance to clear his shield the second half of the race began.
With heavy mud weighing down part of his car's left rear body panel, Stout was still able to keep pace with the 2nd and 3rd place competitors Brooks and Anderson. Brooks made a mistake that allowed both Anderson and Stout to get by then on the final lap Anderson went wide in turn 3 allowing Stout to pull up beside him as the two went side by side over the 200’ table top. They dove into turn 4 beside each other when Anderson caught a rut and shot off the track up near the wall and Stout was back up to 2nd. Brooks gathered himself up and was about three-car lengths behind Stout in 3rd as they entered the tough rhythm section before turn 6. Brooks with no chance at a clean pass made a bonsai move with the full intention of using Stout as a turning post and did just that. Brooks ran an early apex line and then slid up into Stout. The hit was so severe it launched Stout up 35 degrees on to the outside tires and the AIM data device recorded a 4G hit. Stout managed to hang on to it without flipping and finished the final lap crossing the stripe in 3rd.
“My spotter told me he was coming but I wasn’t expecting a full-on assault!” said Stout after the race. “I left him plenty of racing room on the bottom if that’s what he wanted but he knew there was no way to pass me clean, so he chose to take me out. To be honest I’m blown away that he didn’t get a black flag, but we are new to this stuff so either it’s ok to drive someone like that or maybe they just didn’t see it. We do have video of it, so I will seek verification from race control. It is still our best finish to date, but we were one spot better today. I have full confidence that karma and the racing Gods will even things out at some point, they always do!”
Stout, standing in front of his mud riddled Yamaha as he claimed his 3rd place honors, proudly thanked all his sponsors while the camera rolled for CBSSN & MAVTV. The team of asphalt aces are making great progress at a quick pace. Through the first five rounds, the KSR team has a 12th, 7th, 4th, 12th and 3rd including a pole and a 2nd-place qualifying effort at Wheatland.

Battery Tender Fast Five: Monticello Motor Club with Patrick Gallagher
2017 Battery Tender Global MX-5 Cup Champion Patrick Gallagher has had a busy 2018 season, putting his $200,000 in Mazda support towards competing in the IMSA SportsCar Challenge top GS class.
When he’s not racing, he’s teaching others how to do so, usually at Monticello Motor Club. Gallagher spends so much time up at MMC, he has some quick suggestions on what the drivers and teams should keep an eye out for as the series prepares to stage a double-race Saturday for the championship-deciding season finale.

What is this track like?
1. Monticello Motor Club offers a little bit of everything as it was designed to be a track where drivers can learn and progress whether it be their first day on track or the 10th season of driving. I have been a Pro Instructor here for 5 seasons now and love the track and the facility. The south half of the track features a more technical driving style as there are slower corners that take a bit of patience where the north half of the racetrack features some faster corners that take commitment. On top of being technical and also needing to be committed there are three long straightaways that should be perfect for the Global MX5 Cup car to catch a draft.
Whats the fast way around MMC?
2. I suggest trying to do a track walk as there are some key little details about the track that are not exactly easy to see when you’re driving but would help explain some of the techniques that are needed to be fast around MMC.
3. The area surrounding MMC is a great spot in the Summer and Fall, there are plenty of lakes around with great restaurants. I suggest going to White lake, there are a few good places to eat right around there like Benji & Jakes, Table and Tap, Barrio just to name a few.
I’m not at the track…and bored. What to do?
4. There is a new Casino that just opened this season that is also a great place to grab some food and have a good time. The sports book isn’t open yet so no betting on the winner of the Championship but I would put my money on a last lap pass!

5. GO TO THE NEW GALLERY BUILDING! Monticello Motor Club just put up an impressive building that is home to some even more impressive cars and if you don’t go see it over the weekend you will regret it.
